The Myth of Doris

Doris was an Oceanid, one of the three thousand daughters of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys.‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍ She married her brother Nereus, the wise old man of the sea, and together they produced the fifty Nereids — sea nymphs who populated the ocean and assisted sailors. Among the most famous of her daughters were Thetis, mother of Achilles; Amphitrite, queen of the sea; Galatea, beloved of the Cyclops Polyphemus; and Arethusa. Doris herself embodied the sea's generosity — her name is connected to the Greek word for "gift." She was not a figure of storms or depths, but of the sea's productive abundance: fish, safe winds, and the benevolent aspect of ocean life. Her large family made her one of the most genealogically influential sea deities.
