Descendants of Aeolus
The vast family tree stemming from Aeolus son of Hellen, encompassing many of Greece's greatest heroic houses
The Meaning of Descendants of Aeolus
The descendants of Aeolus, son of Hellen and grandson of Deucalion, form one of the largest and most important family networks in Greek mythology. Aeolus settled in Thessaly and fathered numerous children who became founders of royal lines across Greece. His son Cretheus founded Iolcus and fathered Aeson, father of Jason the Argonaut. Sisyphus, another son, founded Corinth and was punished in the underworld for his craftiness. Athamas married the cloud goddess Nephele and later Ino, producing the tale of the Golden Ram. Salmoneus impersonated Zeus and was struck by a thunderbolt. Perieres founded the Messenian royal house. Through these branches, the Aeolids connect to the Argonautic expedition, the Theban wars, the Calydonian Boar hunt through Meleager, and the Trojan War through Odysseus's maternal line.
