The Story of Brauron

Brauron was the site of one of Artemis's most unusual cults.‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍ According to one tradition, a bear sacred to Artemis was killed after it scratched or blinded a young girl; to atone, Athenian girls between the ages of five and ten were sent to serve as "arktoi" — bears — at the sanctuary for a period before they came of age to marry. They wore saffron robes, raced, and performed ritual acts. The sanctuary stood on the eastern coast of Attica and included a remarkable stoa with rooms where the young bear-girls lived during their service.
