Brauron
A coastal sanctuary in Attica sacred to Artemis, where young Athenian girls served as "bears" in her honour.
The Story of Brauron
Brauron was the site of one of Artemis's most unusual cults. According to one tradition, a bear sacred to Artemis was killed after it scratched or blinded a young girl; to atone, Athenian girls between the ages of five and ten were sent to serve as "arktoi" — bears — at the sanctuary for a period before they came of age to marry. They wore saffron robes, raced, and performed ritual acts. The sanctuary stood on the eastern coast of Attica and included a remarkable stoa with rooms where the young bear-girls lived during their service.
