Belt of Hippolyte

concept
Ζωστήρ
artifact

Magical war girdle given to the Amazon queen by her father Ares, conferring martial supremacy on its wearer.

The Myth

It was a gift from the god of war to his daughter — the only piece of divine armor ever given to a woman. Ares gave the girdle to Hippolyta as a symbol of her sovereignty over the Amazons. Unlike the armor of Achilles or the aegis of Zeus, this divine artifact belonged to a female warrior. Eurystheus wanted it for his daughter Admete, making the ninth labour essentially a robbery. Heracles could have received it peacefully, but Hera's interference turned diplomacy into slaughter. The girdle appears to have conferred military authority rather than personal invulnerability — Hippolyta's power came from commanding the Amazons, not from wearing the belt.
