The Meaning of Shield of Achilles

The Shield of Achilles is one of the most celebrated passages in Western literature, occupying nearly 130 lines of Book 18 of Homer's Iliad.‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌ When Achilles's original armour was lost after Patroclus wore it into battle and was slain by Hector, the goddess Thetis visited Hephaestus and begged him to forge new armour for her son. The smith god created a magnificent shield of five layers — bronze, tin, gold, and two of mixed metals — and upon its surface he wrought an astonishing panorama of the cosmos and human life. At the centre were the earth, sea, and sky, with the sun, moon, and constellations. Around these he depicted two cities: one at peace, with a wedding procession and a legal dispute being settled in the agora, and one at war, under siege with ambushes and counter-attacks. He added scenes of ploughing, harvesting, grape-gathering, cattle herding, and a dancing floor modelled on the one Daedalus built at Knossos. The great river Ocean encircled the rim. The shield thus presented the totality of human experience — war and peace, labour and celebration, justice and conflict — contained within the cosmic order, carried into battle by the greatest of warriors.
