Arrephoria
Secret Athenian ritual where young girls carried mysterious objects down from the Acropolis by night
The Meaning of Arrephoria
The Arrephoria was one of Athens's most enigmatic rituals, held in the month of Skirophorion (June-July). Two or four girls aged seven to eleven, called arrephoroi, were selected from noble families to live on the Acropolis for a year, during which they helped weave Athena's peplos. At the festival's climax, the priestess of Athena gave them covered baskets containing unknown objects. The girls descended by night through an underground passage near the sanctuary of Aphrodite in the Gardens, deposited their burdens, and brought back other covered objects without knowing what they carried. This ritual's secrecy was so complete that even Pausanias, writing centuries later, admitted he did not know what the baskets contained.
