Hierophant

religion, mystery cults

The revealer of sacred things — the high priest who conducted the innermost rites of the Eleusinian ‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍Mysteries and alone could display the sacred objects.

The Meaning of Hierophant

The hierophant (one who shows — phainō — sacred things — hiera) was the supreme priestly official of the Eleusinian Mysteries, drawn exclusively from the Eumolpid genos.‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍ He bore no personal name in office — he was simply the hierophant, his individual identity subsumed into his sacred role. His primary function was to display (phainein) the secret hiera — the sacred objects — at the climactic moment of the Greater Mysteries, an act of revelation so sacred that those who witnessed it were forbidden to describe it. Ancient sources speak of the revelation producing overwhelming emotional and intellectual transformation, but refuse to specify what was shown. The hierophant's voice was the primary instrument of the Mysteries: he chanted, his voice carrying weight as the voice of sacred authority itself. After initiation, candidates were called mystai; after the final revelation, epoptai (those who have seen). The hierophant embodied the paradox of mystery religion: sacred knowledge both revealed and withheld, the showing that could not be told.
