The Meaning of Haloa

The Haloa was a midwinter festival held in Poseideon (December-January) at Eleusis, sacred to Demeter and Dionysus and associated with the threshing floor (halos).‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌ It began with a public feast hosted by Eleusinian magistrates, after which the men departed and the women conducted their own secret rites. Ancient sources report that these involved ritual obscenity, phallic cakes, the handling of genital-shaped objects, and whispered encouragement of adultery — all understood as fertility magic to stir the dormant earth back to life during the dead of winter. The Haloa reflected the Greek conviction that sexual energy and agricultural fertility were deeply interconnected forces that women uniquely commanded.
