The Myth of Kabeiroi

The Kabeiroi (Cabeiri) were among the most mysterious figures in Greek religion.‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍ Their number, names, and nature were kept secret by initiates, and modern scholars still debate whether they were gods, daimons, or deified mortals. Their chief cult centres were Samothrace and Lemnos, and initiation into their mysteries was sought by sailors who believed the Kabeiroi could protect them from shipwreck. Philip II of Macedon and Olympias reportedly met at the Samothracian mysteries — making the Kabeiroi's cult the setting for one of history's most consequential romances. Ancient sources variably identified the Kabeiroi as sons of Hephaestus, attendants of the Great Mother, or primordial beings older than the Olympians. Their connection to metalworking and fire linked them to Lemnos, Hephaestus's sacred island. The Roman period saw their cult spread widely, yet their essential secrecy was maintained — we know the rituals existed but precious little about what they actually involved.
