The Legend of Alcippe

Alcippe was the daughter of the war god Ares and Aglauros, a princess of Athens.‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍ Her myth centres on an act of violence and its judicial aftermath. Halirrhothius, a son of Poseidon, assaulted Alcippe, and Ares, discovering what had happened to his daughter, killed Halirrhothius in a rage. Poseidon, furious at the death of his son, demanded justice and brought Ares before a tribunal of the Olympian gods on a rocky hill in Athens. This trial — the first murder trial in Greek mythology — established the hill as the Areopagus, literally "the hill of Ares," which became the seat of the most ancient and solemn court in Athens. The court of the Areopagus judged cases of homicide, impiety, and treason throughout the Classical period. Ares was acquitted, the gods ruling that his act was justified in defence of his daughter. The story served as an origin myth for Athenian judicial institutions, linking the rule of law to divine precedent. Alcippe herself appears only briefly in the surviving sources, but her experience became the foundation for one of Athens's most important legal traditions.
