The Myth of Demeter

Demeter was the goddess of grain, harvest, and the fertility of the earth.‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍ When Hades abducted her daughter Persephone, Demeter's grief was so devastating that she withdrew her gifts from the earth: crops failed, famine spread, and humanity began to perish. Disguised as an old woman, she wandered to Eleusis, where the royal family unknowingly hosted her. She attempted to immortalise the infant prince Demophon by burning away his mortality in fire each night, but was interrupted by his horrified mother. Finally, Zeus intervened and forced Hades to return Persephone — but because the girl had eaten pomegranate seeds in the Underworld, she must return for part of each year. During these months, Demeter grieves and the earth is barren: winter. The Eleusinian Mysteries, the most sacred rites in Greece for over a thousand years, re-enacted this myth of loss and return, promising initiates that as Persephone returns from death, so too might they. The penalty for revealing the Mysteries was death.

Fun Fact

The Eleusinian Mysteries ran for over 1,000 years and were considered so sacred that revealing their secrets was punishable by death.
