The Myth of Oreads

The Oreads were nymphs of the mountains, their name deriving from oros (mountain).‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌ They ranged across the peaks and forested slopes of Greece, and many were companions of Artemis, sharing her love of the hunt and wild places. Echo, the most famous Oread, was condemned by Hera to repeat only the last words spoken to her, a punishment for distracting the goddess with chatter while Zeus pursued his affairs. Echo fell hopelessly in love with Narcissus, but could only repeat his words back to him; when he rejected her, she wasted away until only her voice remained. Individual mountains often had their own named Oreads: Mount Ida in the Troad had its Idaean nymphs who nursed the infant Zeus, and the nymphs of Cithaeron witnessed Actaeon's fatal glimpse of Artemis bathing. The Oreads bridged the divine and wild, existing at the boundary between the settled world of humans and the untamed mountain landscape beyond.

Fun Fact

The myth of Echo — an Oread who could only repeat others' words — gave English the word "echo," preserving a mountain nymph's curse in everyday language.
