The Meaning of Kronia

The Kronia was an Athenian harvest festival held on the twelfth of Hekatombaion (July-August) honouring the Titan Cronus, who had ruled during the mythical Golden Age.‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌ Its most remarkable feature was a temporary inversion of social hierarchy: masters served their slaves at table, slaves feasted freely, and the rigid class boundaries of Athenian society dissolved for a day. This reversal commemorated the Golden Age when all people lived as equals without toil or masters. The Kronia took place just before the Panathenaia and provided a counterpoint to that festival's celebration of ordered Athenian civilization. The Roman Saturnalia — with its own social inversions — was directly modelled on the Kronia.
