The Meaning of Golden Bough

The Golden Bough was a legendary branch of gold growing from a sacred tree, required by any living mortal who wished to enter the underworld and return alive.‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌ The concept is most fully developed in Virgil's Aeneid, where the Sibyl of Cumae instructs Aeneas that he must find and pluck the Golden Bough before he can descend to the realm of the dead to consult his father Anchises. Guided by two doves sent by his mother Venus, Aeneas discovers the branch in a dark forest: its golden leaves gleam among the shadows, and when plucked, a new branch immediately grows in its place. Aeneas presents the bough to Proserpina (Persephone) as an offering upon entering the underworld, and it grants him passage past Charon and Cerberus. The concept has Greek antecedents: Persephone's sacred grove and the golden objects associated with chthonic rites suggest an older tradition. The anthropologist Sir James George Frazer titled his monumental study of myth, magic, and religion "The Golden Bough" (1890), using this image as the key to understanding the ritual foundations of ancient kingship and the cycle of death and renewal that underlies all mythology.
