Katabasis

Katabasis was a living hero's descent to the underworld and return — one of Greek mythology's most profound narrative patterns.
The Meaning of Katabasis
Katabasis — the descent to the Underworld — recurs throughout Greek myth. Orpheus went down to reclaim Eurydice, charming Hades and Cerberus with his lyre. Heracles descended to capture Cerberus as his twelfth labour. Theseus entered Tartarus to abduct Persephone and was trapped until Heracles freed him. Odysseus sailed to the edge of the world to consult the dead, meeting Achilles and Ajax among the shades. Each hero returned transformed. The pattern, rooted in the mysteries at Eleusis and echoed in Dionysus's own descent and return, became foundational for Western narrative.
