The Meaning of God of the Underworld
When the three brothers divided the universe, Hades drew the underworld — a vast subterranean kingdom beneath the earth. He rarely left his domain, preferring his ebony throne beside his wife Persephone, whom he had abducted from a meadow in Sicily. Hermes guided the newly dead to the banks of the Styx, where the ferryman Charon carried them across for the price of an obol. Three judges — Minos, Rhadamanthys, and Aeacus — weighed each soul's life. The virtuous went to the Elysian Fields, the wicked to Tartarus. Hades owned a cap of invisibility forged by the Cyclopes and guarded his gates with the three-headed hound Cerberus, ensuring no shade ever escaped.
