The Meaning of God of Sleep

Hypnos lived in Erebus, the land of eternal darkness, in a cave through which the river of forgetfulness quietly ran.‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌ No rooster crowed there, no dog barked, no wind stirred — only silence and the murmur of water over stones. His bed was made of ebony, surrounded by poppies and other soporific plants. Hera twice persuaded him to put Zeus to sleep during the Trojan War so she could aid the Greeks. The first time succeeded, but when Zeus awoke he nearly hurled Hypnos into the sea; Hypnos escaped by fleeing to his mother Nyx, whom even Zeus feared. For the second attempt, Hera bribed Hypnos with one of the Graces, Pasithea, as his bride. He agreed and lulled Zeus into slumber while wrapped in the shape of a songbird perched on a pine tree.
