Morpheus

God of dreams
Morpheus

The god of dreams who appeared in the sleeping visions of mortals, taking human form.‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍ Son of Hypnos (Sleep), he shaped the dreams of kings and commoners alike.

The Meaning of Morpheus

Morpheus was the son of Hypnos (Sleep) and the chief of the Oneiroi — the dream spirits.‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍ While his brothers Phobetor and Phantasos created animal and inanimate dream images respectively, Morpheus specialized in appearing as humans in dreams, delivering messages and visions.

He lived with his father in the land of sleep, surrounded by fields of poppies. When the gods wished to communicate with mortals through dreams, it was often Morpheus who carried the message, taking the shape of a familiar person to deliver divine instructions or warnings.

Morpheus could perfectly mimic the appearance, voice, and mannerisms of any human being. His name comes from "morphe" (form or shape), reflecting his ability to take any human form. In Ovid's telling, when Hera wanted to inform the mortal queen Alcyone of her husband's death at sea, she sent Morpheus to appear in Alcyone's dream in the exact likeness of her drowned husband.
