Rod of Asclepius
conceptA serpent-entwined staff carried by Asclepius, the god of medicine, serving as the authentic ancient symbol of healing and medical practice.
The Myth
The Rod of Asclepius was the sacred attribute of Asclepius, son of Apollo and the mortal Coronis. Apollo entrusted the infant Asclepius to Chiron the centaur, the wisest healer among the immortals. Chiron taught Asclepius the art of medicine until the pupil surpassed the master. The single serpent coiling around the staff represented renewal through the shedding of skin, connecting to the healing practices at Asclepius's great sanctuary at Epidaurus. There, patients slept in the abaton and received healing visions. Asclepius became so skilled that he could raise the dead, which alarmed Hades, who complained to Zeus. Zeus struck Asclepius with a thunderbolt but later placed him among the stars as the constellation Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer.

Fun Fact
The World Health Organization, the European Medical Association, and the British Medical Association all correctly use the single-serpent Rod of Asclepius. But walk into most American hospitals and you'll see the two-serpent caduceus of Hermes — god of commerce and thieves — which some doctors find darkly appropriate given US healthcare costs.
