The Legend of Creon

Creon was the brother of Jocasta and became regent of Thebes multiple times across the Theban cycle.‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌ After Oedipus' downfall, Creon governed until Oedipus' sons came of age. When Eteocles and Polynices killed each other in the war of the Seven against Thebes, Creon took the throne and decreed that Polynices, the attacker, should lie unburied as a traitor. Antigone defied this edict and performed funeral rites for her brother. Creon sentenced her to be sealed alive in a tomb. Despite warnings from the prophet Tiresias, he relented too late: Antigone, his son Haemon, and his wife Eurydice all died, leaving Creon broken and alone.
