The Myth of Concordia

Concordia personified the essential Roman virtue of civic agreement between different social classes.‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍ Her oldest temple in the Forum, traditionally dated to 367 BC, was built to celebrate the resolution of the Conflict of the Orders — the long struggle between patricians and plebeians. This temple was rebuilt grandly by Tiberius and became one of the most prominent buildings in the Forum, serving as an art gallery housing Greek masterpieces. Concordia appeared on countless Roman coins, especially during periods of civil strife, as emperors tried to project an image of unity. Her cult was particularly important because Roman political stability depended on negotiated agreement between factions rather than absolute rule.
