The Meaning of Voyage of the Argo

The Voyage of the Argo was the first great maritime expedition in Greek mythology, a journey that mapped the boundaries of the known world and established the archetype of the heroic sea quest.‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍ The ship Argo, built by Argus with Athena's guidance and incorporating a prophetic timber from the sacred oak of Dodona, carried fifty of Greece's greatest heroes eastward across the Aegean and through the Hellespont into the Black Sea. Their first major stop was the island of Lemnos, where the women had murdered all their men and welcomed the Argonauts with open arms — Heracles eventually shamed the crew into continuing. At Cyzicus, the heroes accidentally killed their host king in a night battle. On the coast of Mysia, the nymph of a spring abducted Heracles's young companion Hylas, causing Heracles to search frantically and be left behind. The blind seer Phineus, tormented by Harpies who fouled his food, was rescued by the winged sons of Boreas in exchange for navigational advice. Following Phineus's counsel, the Argo threaded the Symplegades — clashing rocks that crushed any ship attempting passage — by releasing a dove first and timing their dash. After surviving storms, hostile tribes, and the bronze giant Talos on Crete, the crew reached Colchis. The return voyage took various routes depending on the source: Apollonius of Rhodes sent them up the Danube, across to the Adriatic, and through North Africa. The Voyage of the Argo expanded the Greeks' imaginative geography and embodied their identity as a seafaring civilisation.
