Techne

💭 conceptΤέχνη
craft, art, skill

The Greek concept of skilled craft or art — systematic knowledge applied to making or producing.‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌

The Meaning of Techne

Techne encompassed all skilled making — from Hephaestus forging Achilles' shield to Daedalus building the Labyrinth to Athena weaving.‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌ The gods who possessed supreme techne were Hephaestus (metalwork), Athena (weaving, strategy), Apollo (music), and Asclepius (medicine). Daedalus was the mortal master of techne, but his creation — the wings that killed Icarus — showed that techne without wisdom leads to disaster. Arachne's techne in weaving rivalled Athena's, but her hubris in saying so destroyed her. Prometheus gave techne to humanity alongside fire.
