Himeros
God of immediate desire and passionate longing, companion of Aphrodite from her birth
The Myth of Himeros
Himeros was the god of immediate, overwhelming desire — the sharp pang of longing that strikes at the sight of beauty. He was present at Aphrodite's birth, joining Eros in escorting her from the sea foam to Olympus, according to Hesiod's Theogony. While Eros represented love in its broader sense, Himeros embodied the specific, urgent pull of desire — the wanting that precedes fulfilment. He was depicted as a winged youth, often indistinguishable from Eros in art, carrying a bow or a taenia (headband). Himeros appeared in the retinue of Aphrodite alongside Eros, Pothos, and the Graces. His presence at Aphrodite's emergence from the sea suggested that desire was woven into the fabric of beauty itself from the very beginning.
