God of Lightning
Zeus wields lightning as both weapon and symbol of supreme authority, striking down those who defy cosmic order.
The Meaning of God of Lightning
The Cyclopes — Brontes (Thunder), Steropes (Lightning), and Arges (Bright) — forged Zeus's thunderbolts in gratitude after he freed them from Tartarus, where Kronos had imprisoned them. These bolts became the most feared weapon in creation: a single throw could shatter mountains or reduce cities to ash. Zeus used them strategically rather than recklessly. He struck down Phaethon to prevent the sun chariot from incinerating the earth. He destroyed Asclepius for raising the dead and blurring the line between mortal and immortal. He obliterated the impious king Salmoneus, who had dragged bronze kettles behind his chariot and thrown torches to imitate thunder and lightning. When the Giants stormed Olympus, Zeus's bolts were the decisive weapon, splitting the battlefield with blinding light.
