Cynocephali
Race of dog-headed people described by Greek geographers as dwelling at the edges of the known world
The Myth of Cynocephali
The Cynocephali were a fabulous race of beings with human bodies and the heads of dogs, described by Greek and later Roman writers as inhabiting the distant fringes of the known world, variously placed in India, Libya, or the far north. Ctesias of Cnidus provided one of the earliest detailed accounts, describing them as a people who communicated through barking, wore animal skins, and hunted with their bare hands. They were said to be just and to trade fairly with their neighbours despite their bestial appearance. Herodotus mentioned dog-headed people in Libya, and later writers including Pliny the Elder elaborated on the tradition. The Cynocephali represent the Greek fascination with monstrous races at the borders of civilisation, beings who challenged the boundary between human and animal. In medieval Christian tradition, Saint Christopher was sometimes depicted as a Cynocephalus.
