Herodotus
Father of History whose Histories records mythological traditions alongside the Persian Wars narrative
The Meaning of Herodotus
Herodotus of Halicarnassus (c. 484-425 BCE) composed the Histories — an account of the Greco-Persian Wars set within a vast ethnographic and geographical survey of the known world. Cicero called him the "Father of History," and his work stands as the first sustained prose investigation into past events and their causes. For mythology, Herodotus is invaluable: he records how different peoples told different versions of myths, questions the origins of the gods, reports on religious practices from Egypt to Scythia, and applies critical reasoning to legendary traditions. He famously debated whether Helen actually went to Troy or was detained in Egypt. His comparative approach — examining Greek myths alongside those of other cultures — was revolutionary.
