Prophecy, centaurs

Centaur seer who read omens in the flight of birds and warned his kin against fighting Heracles‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌

The Legend of Asbolus

Asbolus was a centaur who possessed the rare gift of divination through augury, reading the future in the flight patterns of birds.‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌ He dwelt among the centaurs of Thessaly and served as their prophet and advisor. When Heracles came to the region during his fourth labour to capture the Erymanthian Boar, the centaur Pholus opened a jar of communal wine to share with the hero. The scent drew the other centaurs into a frenzy, and they attacked Heracles. Asbolus, reading the bird omens, warned his fellow centaurs that fighting Heracles would bring only disaster and death, but they ignored his counsel. Heracles drove them off with arrows dipped in the Hydra's venom, killing many. Asbolus's ignored prophecy represents a recurring theme in Greek myth where seers foresee catastrophe but cannot prevent it.
