Martial
Relating to war or warriors, from Mars (Ares), the Roman god of war who gave his name to military practice.
The Meaning of Martial
Mars was the Roman equivalent of Ares, but while the Greeks viewed Ares with some distaste, the Romans revered Mars as the father of Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. He was second only to Jupiter in the Roman pantheon and represented not just battlefield rage but military discipline, agricultural protection, and civic duty. The month of March (Martius) was named after him because it marked the beginning of the campaigning season. His field in Rome, the Campus Martius, served as a military training ground and assembly area. The adjective "martial" entered English through French and Latin, meaning "relating to war or the military." It persists in terms like martial law, martial arts, and court martial. The planet Mars was named for him because of its red colour, which reminded ancient observers of blood on a battlefield.
