The Myth of Geras

Geras was the divine personification of old age, one of the baleful spirits born from Nyx (Night) alone, without a father, according to Hesiod's Theogony.‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍ His siblings included Thanatos (Death), Hypnos (Sleep), Moros (Doom), and the Keres (Death-spirits), placing him firmly among the grim inevitabilities of mortal existence. Geras was depicted in Greek art as a tiny, shrivelled old man — most notably on vase paintings showing Heracles confronting or driving him away, symbolising the hero's attempt to conquer even aging through his pursuit of immortal glory. Unlike many personified concepts, Geras received little cult worship, as the Greeks regarded old age with dread rather than reverence. He represented not wisdom but the withering of the body.
