The Story of Geraestus

Cape Geraestus at the tip of Euboea was one of the most important landmarks for sailors navigating between the Aegean and the Greek mainland.‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌ It had a sanctuary of Poseidon where sailors made offerings before or after rounding the dangerous cape. In the Odyssey, the wandering Menelaus stopped here on his way home from Troy. More significantly, it was near Geraestus and the Euboean straits that the Persian fleet was wrecked by storms during Xerxes' invasion — a disaster the Greeks attributed to the divine protection of their sanctuaries.

The Euboean straits near Geraestus were so treacherous that the Persians lost more ships to the weather there than in any single sea battle during the invasion of 480 BCE.
