Anakalypsis
The ceremonial unveiling of the bride before her husband and wedding guests — the climactic moment of the Greek marriage ritual.
The Meaning of Anakalypsis
The anakalypsis was one of the most charged ritual moments in Greek wedding practice. The bride, heavily veiled throughout the procession, was unveiled before her new husband in a formal gesture — often accompanied by songs (epithalamia) and the exchange of gifts (anakalypteria). The veil itself marked the transitional status of the bride: covered, she was still a maiden belonging to her father's household; unveiled, she was transferred into her husband's sphere. Poets drew on the anakalypsis as a literary metaphor for sudden revelation — the unveiling of truth, the disclosure of identity. The moment appears in mythological narratives too: Psyche's forbidden attempt to look at Eros reverses the anakalypsis, seeking to unmask what the divine had kept hidden, with catastrophic consequences. The ritual also connected to the broader Greek anxiety about the seen and unseen — proper vision, properly timed, was a category of sacred knowledge.
