The Legend of Amphissa

Amphissa was the daughter of Macareus, son of Aeolus, and one of the mortal women loved by the god Apollo.‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌ According to the tradition preserved by Pausanias, Apollo fell in love with Amphissa and pursued her. Their union gave her name to the important city of Amphissa in Ozolian Locris, near the sacred site of Delphi. The city that bore her name became a significant settlement in central Greece, controlling the pass that led from the Gulf of Corinth to the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. In the historical period, Amphissa's cultivation of sacred land near Delphi provoked the Fourth Sacred War, which gave Philip II of Macedon the pretext to intervene in Greek affairs. Thus the city named after this mythological heroine played a pivotal role in the end of Greek independence.
