Amphidamas
King of Chalcis in Euboea whose funeral games famously featured a poetic contest between Homer and Hesiod
The Legend of Amphidamas
Amphidamas was a king of Chalcis on the island of Euboea during the Lelantine War, one of the earliest recorded conflicts in Greek history. He died fighting in this war between Chalcis and Eretria over the fertile Lelantine plain. His sons held magnificent funeral games in his honour, attracting competitors from across Greece. According to the ancient tradition preserved in the Contest of Homer and Hesiod, both legendary poets competed at these games. Hesiod was awarded the prize, reportedly because the judges preferred his verses about agriculture and peace over Homer's descriptions of war. The funeral games of Amphidamas thus became one of the most celebrated literary occasions in the mythological tradition, linking heroic-age kingship with the birth of Greek poetic culture.
