Greek Mythology Notes

Chronos (Primordial)

Χρόνος
Personification of Time

Chronos was the primordial personification of Time itself — not the Titan Kronos, though they were often merged in later tradition.

The Myth

In Orphic cosmogony, Chronos emerged at creation's beginning. With Ananke, he encircled the cosmic egg as intertwined serpents. Later Greeks confused Chronos (Time) with Kronos (the Titan), leading to Father Time with a sickle — Kronos's weapon reinterpreted as Time harvesting all things.
