Arete

Arete was the Greek concept of excellence in all things — not merely moral virtue but the fulfilment of one's highest potential in body, mind, and character.
The Meaning of Arete
Arete meant being the best possible version of yourself. For a warrior, it meant courage and martial skill. For a ruler, wisdom and justice. For a horse, speed. For a knife, sharpness. It was both competitive (Homer's heroes seek to be "the best of the Achaeans") and ethical (Socrates argued true arete was knowledge of the good). Heracles at the crossroads was offered a choice between Arete (the hard path of excellence) and Kakia (the easy path of vice) — he chose Arete. The concept drove the Olympic Games, philosophical inquiry, and political life.

Fun Fact
