The Meaning of Electra Complex

Carl Jung coined the term Electra complex in 1913 as a female counterpart to Freud's Oedipus complex.‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌ The name derives from Electra, the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. After Clytemnestra murdered Agamemnon upon his return from Troy, Electra devoted her life to avenging her father. She encouraged her brother Orestes to return home and kill their mother, and in some versions participated directly in the matricide. Jung argued that girls experience an analogous psychosexual development to boys: the young girl develops an unconscious attachment to her father and sees her mother as a rival. Freud himself rejected the term, preferring to extend the Oedipus complex to cover both sexes, but "Electra complex" gained wide currency in popular psychology and remains commonly used. The term appears in clinical literature, literary analysis, and cultural commentary. Like the Oedipus complex, it demonstrates how ancient Greek dramatic characters continue to serve as archetypes for psychological states that modern science attempts to describe in clinical terms.
